Overview of the Roku Streambar SE
Last year, I had the chance to test the Roku Streambar SE, and after its recent discount during Amazon’s Memorial Day Sale, I decided to highlight it once again. Roku’s offerings, especially their video streamers, have long been a staple, but this Streambar SE caught my attention due to its affordable price point. For just $73 (a 27% discount), it offers excellent value for its performance.
What is the Roku Streambar SE?
The Streambar SE is a mini soundbar that combines Roku’s entry-level 4K HDR streaming capabilities with an impressive audio performance in a small package. It’s designed specifically for smaller spaces like bedrooms, home offices, or dorm rooms, and it’s perfect for those not looking to upgrade their main TV setup but still want better sound.
Specifications
- Streaming Resolution: 4K HDR/HDR10+
- Drivers: Dual 1.9-inch full-range drivers with a bass port
- Dimensions: 9.6 inches (width) x 3.5 inches (depth) x 2.4 inches (height)
- Weight: 2 pounds (907 grams)
- Included Accessories: Roku remote, power adapter, HDMI cable, optical cable, and 2 AAA batteries
- Wireless Connectivity: Bluetooth 5.0
- Expandable: Can be paired with Roku’s Wireless Bass subwoofer for a 2.1 sound system
- Additional Features: Compatibility with Roku Smart Home, Apple AirPlay, HomeKit, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa
Easy Setup
Setting up the Streambar SE is straightforward, much like any other Roku device. You can easily connect it to a TV with an HDMI-ARC port, though it also supports an HDMI and optical cable setup for older TVs that lack an ARC port. For my testing, I connected it to an older 42-inch Vizio TV in my home office, and the improvement in audio quality was immediately noticeable.
Impressive Sound for Its Size
Although the Streambar SE is compact, its sound output is impressive. While it can’t produce the deepest bass due to its size, the sound it generates is better than what most built-in TV speakers offer. Dialogue is clear and crisp, and the midrange frequencies are notably strong. For those seeking more bass, the Streambar SE can be paired with Roku’s Wireless Bass subwoofer (sold separately for $130).
However, the Streambar SE lacks the wide soundstage and stereo separation you would find in more expensive models like Roku’s Streambar ($130), which has side-firing speakers and can pair with additional rear speakers for a full surround sound setup. But considering its price, the sound quality is more than satisfactory.
Additional Features
The Roku Streambar SE offers various sound modes, including Dialogue, Movie, Music, Night, and Standard. It also features volume leveling to reduce the impact of loud commercials. Bluetooth support allows for easy connection to wireless headphones, and it integrates with Spotify Connect and Apple AirPlay for convenient media streaming.
The included Roku remote is a basic model, but you can download the Roku mobile app, which supports voice control and search functions.
Why the Roku Streambar SE Is a Great Choice
While the Roku Streambar ($130) does offer better sound quality, the Streambar SE’s compact design and lower price make it an excellent option for upgrading sound on smaller TVs, particularly older models. It may not have all the bells and whistles of higher-end models, but it delivers exceptional value for its price.
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly upgrade for your TV’s sound system, the Roku Streambar SE is an excellent choice that won’t break the bank.
